PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

I am pleased to write the introduction to the Euro-Congrès Meetings Guide produced by the European Convention Bureau. I am happy, through this foreword, to support the work of the European Convention Bureau as an organization which aims to encourage the creation of jobs and prosperity by promoting European conference and meeting facilities.

European policies add value and benefit society, very often by economies of scale - as demonstrated in the area of common defence policy and in the European space policy. In order for Europe 2020 to succeed as the EU's growth strategy for the coming decade, we need to have a meaningful set of directives and regulations, just as we did ago when the single market mechanism was introduced.

Europe 2020 actions are of crucial importance to the future prospects of all European citizens, delivering sustainable jobs, long-term economic growth, and social progress.

Our Europe 2020 Strategy correctly identifies investment priorities: innovation and energy. We have the ideas, the companies and the experience. Now we need proper financing.

The next EU Multiannual Financial Framework must reflect the ambitions of the Europe 2020 strategy

Without the EU we will not succeed in growing out of the crisis. National strategies need to be coordinated, and we need to work together in order to maximise our impact.

We need investments in new technologies, in infrastructure, in the green economy, in energy, in research. These are the areas which will help create jobs.

The Single Market remains a key part of our common project. It has created millions of jobs and increased our collective GDP. Closing the gaps in the Internal Market - as proposed in the Monti report - is one of the initiatives we need today. We should discuss creating a European Energy Community (EEC). Sixty one years ago, Robert Schuman called for a pooling of sovereignty in the energy of the 20th century - we should do the same for the 21st century. We need to invest in education, in new technology, in our human capital, and in innovation. We wish to create the jobs of the future.

Let me congratulate once again the European Convention Bureau and wish them all the best with the Euro-Congrès Meetings Guide and their other European wide projects.
